WoW Fishing Equipment
The equipment section describes gear, consumables, and enhancements that can be used to boostr your fishing skills, or help you fish.
WoW Fishing Poles
A fishing pole must be equipped in your main hand to catch fish. Only one pole may be equipped at a time.
Most fishing poles give bonuses to fishing skill: While the pole is equipped, your effective fishing skill will be increased by the bonus. So if you skill is 100, and you equip a Big Iron Fishing Pole with +20 bonus, your effective fishing skill will be 120. Bonuses from poles stack with bonuses from other fishing gear and lures.
Poles are held like weapons, and can be used in combat. They cannot be enchanted (except with lines), and using them will not raise combat skills (such as "unarmed").
This table summarises fishing statistics for all poles. Further details of each pole are listed below by skill bonus.
| Fishing Pole | Skill Bonus | Bonus Stats | Minimum Fishing Skill | Minimum Level | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fishing Pole | - | - | 1 | - | Vendor |
| Blump Family Fishing Pole | +3 | - | 1 | 10 | Alliance-only quest |
| Strong Fishing Pole | +5 | - | 10 | 5 | Vendor |
| Darkwood Fishing Pole | +15 | - | 50 | 15 | Fishing |
| Big Iron Fishing Pole | +20 | - | 100 | 25 | Shellfish Traps in Desolace |
| Seth's Graphite Fishing Pole | +20 | +52 Stanima | 200 | 62 | Quest |
| Nat Pagle's Extreme Angler FC-5000 | +20 | - | 100 | 44 | Horde-only quest |

| Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole | +30 | - | 300 | 68** | Kalu'ak (Tuskarr) Exalted |
| +30 | +40 Shadow Resistance | 300 | - | Dalaran Fishing Daily | |
| Jeweled Fishing Pole | +30 | - | 300 | - | Dalaran Fishing Daily |
| Arcanite Fishing Pole | +35 | - | 300 | Stranglethorn Extravaganza |
**Nat's Lucky Fishing poles has no level requirement to use, however you need to be level 35 and 225 + fishing skill to obtain Nat Pagle, Angler Extreme. *Hint* - Also as of patch 3.1 this quest does not need to be done to get Artisan fishing anymore. If you have completed this quest before patch 3.1 return to Nat Pagle
** The Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole has no level requirement to use, but you must be at least level 68 to complete quests to gain Kalu'ak (Tuskarr) Exalted reputation.
There are three "fishing poles" which cannot be used to fish, and are not described here:
When it comes to fishing poles we recommand getting Nat's Lucky Fishing Pole from the quest Nat Pagle, Angler Extreme. This use to be a mandatory quest to become an Artisan Fisherman but since patch 3.1 this has been removed and can be learned from a fishing trainer. If you have completed this quest go back to Nat Pagle and you can recieve Nat's Lucky Fishing Pole. Now you can do your Daily Fishing Quests to try to get the Bone Fishing Pole and Jeweled Fishing pole or you can win the Stranglethorn Extravaganza and get the Arcanite Fishing Pole for a +5 fishing skill increase.
WoW Fishing Gear
Certain gear gives bonuses to fishing skill. Equipping these items increases your fishing skill while the gear remains equipped. Bonuses from fishing gear, poles and lures all stack. For example, a bonus from a pole will stack with a bonus from a hat. Of course, you can only equip one pole and wear one hat at a time. The table below summarises all items that give an "equipable" bonus to fishing skill.
| Gear | Position | Skill Bonus | Stamina Bonus | Spirit Bonus | Minimum Fishing Skill | Use | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Enchant Gloves - Fishing | Hands | +2 | - | - | - | - | Enchanter (Formula) |
| High Test Eternium Fishing Line | Line | +5 | - | - | 150 | - | |
| Lucky Fishing Hat | Head | +5 | +15 | - | 1 | - | Stranglethorn Extravaganza / Dalaran Fishing Dailies |
| Nat Pagle's Extreme Anglin' Boots | Feet | +5 | +12 | - | 1 | - | Stranglethorn Extravaganza |
| Spun Truesilver Fishing Line | Line | +3 | - | - | 300 | - | Outland Fishing Dailies |
| Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat | Head | +5 | +40 | +40 | - | +75 lure | Dalaran Fishing Dailies |
In addition, there are two consumable that gives a bonus to fishing skill:
- Captain Rumsey's Lager: This gives a temporary (3 minute) bonus to the angler.
- Underbelly Elixir: Sometimes turns you into a hungry Tuskarr (for 10 minutes) with a +50 fishing skill bonus.
Other fishing "consumables" are lures, which are applied to the pole, not the angler.
((A +5 fishing skill enchant to gloves has been rumoured to exist. This seems logical because +2 and +5 enchants are available for other gathering professions. However, this item has never been seen.))
Lures
Lures (bait) add a temporary skill bonus to your fishing pole, which is expended after 10 minutes. They increase your effective fishing skill, without altering your personal skill. Lures are commonly purchased from vendors such as Fishing Suppliers.
To use a lure apply it to your fishing pole. ((In your inventory, click on the lure, and then click once on the pole. The lure will take a few seconds to be applied - wait for the progress bar to complete before starting to fish. An icon will be displayed while the lure is active - by default in the top-right of the screen.))
Lures add to your fishing skill at the time you cast the line. If the lure fades between casting and catching, that catch will still benefit from the lure skill bonus. Only one lure can be active at one time. Lures do not "stack" with other lures, however lures do stack with bonuses from poles and fishing gear.
For the casual fisherman or woman, lures provide a way to fish more effectively in areas where their personal skill is not sufficient to stop fish getting away (or even to catch any fish at all). At lower levels, consider balancing the cost of the lures against the "value" of the fish gained.
The table below lists all types of lure.
| Lure | Skill Bonus | Duration (minutes) | Minimum Fishing Skill Required | Cost (each) | Availability | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shiny Bauble | +25 | 10 | 1 | 50c | Fishing, trade, and some general goods suppliers. Also a reward from Alliance-only quests "The Family and the Fishing Pole" and "Red Snapper - Very Tasty!". | |
| Nightcrawlers | +50 | 10 | 50 | 1s | Fishing, trade, and some general goods suppliers. Occasionally found on the corpses of Undead monsters (ghouls, zombies). | |
| Aquadynamic Fish Lens | +50 | 10 | 50 | - | Reward for Alliance-only quest "Electropellers" (Darkshore). | |
| Bright Baubles | +75 | 10 | 100 | 2s 50c | Fishing and trade goods suppliers. | |
| Flesh Eating Worm | +75 | 10 | 100 | - | Occasionally found on the corpses of Rotted One monsters in Duskwood. | |
| Aquadynamic Fish Attractor | +100 | 10** | 100 | 2s 50c | Limited supply from fishing suppliers. Manufactured by engineers using a trained 150-skill recipe. | |
| Sharpened Fish Hook | +100 | 10 | 100 | - | 4-6 are commonly found in Bags of Fishing Treasure, the reward for completing the Daily Fishing Quests. | |
| Glow Worm | +100 | 60 | 100 | - | You have a chance to get one (maybe two) out of the new Bag of Fishing Treasures from the Dalaran fishing dailies. | |
- ** Formerly 5 minutes, but now ((since patch 2.1.2)) last 10 minutes.
- Costs assume no reputation-related reductions. All lures stack in 20.
- Aquadynamic Fish Attractor may be rare. Vendors have limited supplies. This typically means one or two, and only if someone else hasn't purchased them recently. Engineers can make these, so you may find them sold via the Auction House. You will not always find as many as you need.
The Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat effectively acts as a reusable +75 lure.
Mudskunk Lure (sold by Nat Pagle after completing the quest "Nat's Measuring Tape") are not "lures" at all: They are used only to summon Gahz'ranka in Zul'Gurub.
Weather-Beaten Journal
- Teaches: Find Fish (pool tracking on minimap)
- Minimum fishing skill required: 100
- Source: Curious Crate, Heavy Supply Crate, Iron Bound Trunk, Mithril Bound Trunk, Watertight Trunk, and (rarely) Tightly Sealed Trunk
The Weather-Beaten Journal teaches the ability "Find Fish", which makes "nearby fishing nodes appear on the minimap" - just like tracking abilities for minerals and herbs. The journal binds when picked up (but there are methods to allow journals to be traded, see below). A fishing skill of 100 is required to learn the ability. The picture right shows the ability being used to highlight the location of nearby pools.
The journal can be found in many fished-up crates and trunks, specifically Curious Crate, Heavy Supply Crate, Iron Bound Trunk, Mithril Bound Trunk, Watertight Trunk, and (rarely) Tightly Sealed Trunk. The type of pool the container is fished from does not matter ((based on Public Test Realm experiments, at least)).
Curious Crates seem to give the best catch rate, with almost half of all crates containing a Weather-Beaten Journal. Curious Crates are caught from any pool in Outland - about 4% of the catch. No pools primarily contain Curious Crates, which means that if you specifically want a journal, it may be easier to fish the pools of wreckage in Azeroth containing Iron Bound, Mithril Bound or Watertight Trunks.
For those with little fishing skill, the easiest source of journals are Watertight Trunks, which are found in floating wreckage pools in Ashenvale, Hillsbrad Foothills, Stonetalon Mountains and Wetlands. All these areas requiring just 55 skill to cast, 150 to stop get-aways. About one in five Watertight Trunks should contain a journal. Experienced fishermen and women should find a journal easily, while fishing pools for other fish - they aren't terribly rare!
If you have not already found one, Weather-Beaten Journal can also be found in Bags of Fishing Treasure, the reward the Daily Fishing Quests.
An angler who already knows the Find Fish ability will never be able to see new journals. However, the trunks they catch may still contain journals - they just can't see them: If the trunk does not disappear when looted, it probably contains a journal. The "empty" trunk can be mailed or given to an angler that does not already know the Find Fish ability. They will be able to see the journal, loot it, and learn to track pools. To be able to see the journal, the angler receiving the trunk must know how to fish (have some skill in fishing).
More facts about the Weather-Beaten Journal:
- If you don't immediately pick up the book from whatever chest it's in, you can fish up multiple copies of it.
- If you don't immediately pick up the book from the chest it's in, you can also freely trade/mail the chest the book is in to other players. The receiving player can then pick up the book themselves and use it once their fishing skill is high enough.
- If you pick up the book and learn the skill, any other copies you have in your possession will become invisible. However, invisible copies are still in whatever chests they came in, and if any of these chests are mailed/traded to other players who haven't already learned the Find Fish skill, copies of the book will be visible to them and they can freely pick it up if they wish.
- Once you have the Find Fish skill, you won't come across another copy of this book via fishing nodes or debris.
